What is Diabetes Mellitus?

What is Diabetes Mellitus?

Diabetes Mellitus is a disease that affects both men and women and is sometime referred to as diabetes. Persons diagnosed with this disease are said to have high blood sugar and are not producing enough insulin to help control this high level of blood sugar.

This disease is said to have been more dominant in women than men. However, many men especially from African descent are more prone to this disease rather than men of other race. For some times now, children have been also diagnosed with diabetes and so doctors have taken a different approach in testing for signs of this disease.

There are several factors that lead to a woman having diabetes mellitus such as nutrition during puberty, childbearing and aging especially during the stages of menopause. For men, diabetes is caused mainly because of bad diet.

Diabetes Mellitus can cause other illnesses to occur.
Individuals who are diagnosed with diabetes can develop problems during their sexual health. Women can develop dryness in their vagina and men can develop erectile dysfunction. These two problems are caused by poor blood circulation.

Patients with diabetes mellitus are also at risk of developing urinary tract infections which include per renal abscesses and bladder infections.

Diabetes mellitus is a serious disease that should be well taken care of and so patients will have to put a serious health management program in place.

The first thing to consider when putting a program in place for diabetes is what you should and should not eat. So it is very important that the patient visits a nutritionist or dietician.

You should also consider finding a doctor that can give you all the information you need about the disease.

Patients with diabetes will be taught to read their blood sugar level and record each result of their blood sugar reading. This will allow them manage their glucose level. When you can control your glucose then you will be able to prevent any further complications.

Diabetes Mellitus is now a great concern to individuals all over the globe. More seminars and measures will have to be put in place so that individuals pay more attention to their health especially in the area of nutrition.

Body Weight Exercises | Include Them in Your Fitness Program

Body weight exercises are ideal for individuals who do not have the time to go to the gym or join a fitness club. These type of exercises are effective enough to keep you fit and in good shape for the day and even the entire week.

There are a number of things to be accomplished in life and so people are so busy trying to see their accomplishments come to pass as time goes by. It seems as if the word “exercise” is far from peoples mind. But even if you have a busy schedule, simple body exercises can be placed on your time table. All you need to do is to create the time for it (about 15 to 20 minutes per day will do). Some discipline will also be required.

What are some of the body weight exercises that you can do by yourself?

Here is a list of the most popular ones.

1    - Push-ups
2    - Squats
3    - Crunches

All three exercises are most effective after you are finish walking or jogging in the morning or evening.

Push-up is a body weight exercise that develops strength in the entire body. Push-ups are mostly practiced by athletes and men but it is a great exercise for all individuals. There are different levels of push-up exercises such as easy, medium and hard. It is up to you as to which level of push-up exercises you’d prefer to take on. However, I would recommend that you start from the easiest one which is the modified push-up. In the modified push-up you put less weight on your arms. This is because your knees will be on the ground to support your arm.

Squatting is also a unique exercise that all individuals can do. Squats help to develop strength in your legs and lower body which includes your loins. Here is a simple description of squat.

Stand with your feet apart, they should be almost inline with your shoulder. Stretch your hands forward at shoulder height and bend your knees with your back straight. While you bend you should inhale deeply. Bend until you are in a sitting position. Move arms backward, side ways and forward then go back to standing position. Repeat the process several times.

Crunches are also ideal for strengthening sections of your body especially the abdominal muscles. This exercise is effective when done after a long walk or after jogging. The most popular crunch or abdominal exercise is performed on the back with shoulders off the ground while the knees are pointing upwards and your feet are flat on the ground. Move your head forward towards your knees and backwards towards the ground but do not touch the floor or ground with your head or shoulders.

All three body weight exercises are ideal in strengthening certain muscles in your body and they are all inexpensive methods of exercising. Spend some time practicing at least two of these exercises per day and I am sure that your body will feel and look much better as time progresses.

Health

Oral health practice and management

Oral Health! How important is it?

How beautiful is your smile, and what are you doing to preserve it?

As we get older we tend to be more concern about our health especially our teeth or our oral hygiene. The mouth is a very important part of our body and it contributes a lot our facial structure. Therefore it is important for us to pay as much attention to our teeth, tongue and gum everyday.

Do you remember your first tooth ace and how awful it was? I sure remembered mine and would not want to experience any pain like that in my mouth again.

As we become adults we are faced with great responsibilities and the reality is that we are too busy sometime to take good care of ourselves. The frequent visits to the dentist have faded and so if we are not careful, we will be force by some abnormality to do an unexpected visit.

So how can we maintain proper oral hygiene with such a busy life?

There are some basic steps or practices that we need to follow and these steps and practices are not new. Of course we have heard them before but we need to be discipline and try to maintain each step.

  1. Brush your teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste.
  2. Change your toothbrush every three to four months.
  3. Clean in between your teeth with floss, soft plastic picks and water pick type devices.
  4. Rinse with an antimicrobial rinse.
  5. Visit your dentist regularly, every four months, for cleaning and inspection.
  6. Eat healthy – Eat a balance diet and avoid or limit snacking.
  7. Know your blood type and find out what food you should eat that is more suitable for your blood type.
The steps mentioned above are simple and easy to follow because we are able to do all of them even with our busy schedule.

Now, while we are trying to practice good oral hygiene there are some practices that we need to avoid.

  1. Do not eat after you have brush your teeth in the nights. Try to eat before you brush your teeth in the nights. This common habit is been done by almost all human beings.
  2. Do not drink or eat anything that is too hot for your mouth, some area of the gum and teeth can be damage during this practice.
  3. Avoid piecing the tongue, lips and cheek because it is an unsafe method. Bacteria and infections are likely to occur when we practice this type of art on our body especially in the mouth. It might seem like a sexy thing to do but it is bad oral practice.

It our duty to take good care of ourselves and we can do it if we try to get ride of some bad habits that are not healthy for us. The practice of good oral hygiene it very important to us and should be at the top of the list when we think about our health. In my opinion, the state of our teeth and gum can define the overall health of our body and so the practices mentioned early are not to be taken lightly.

Have a great day, and remember to practice good oral health.

I have an erectile dysfunction. What should I do?

For centuries, men have had fears of losing their nature and are very embarrassed if it happens to them. In other words if males are unable to have an erection it is a big deal.
What is an erection?
An erection is when the male penis lengthens, expands and stands up in an upright position before and during sexual intercourse. An erection occurs when an engorged flow of blood goes into the tissues of the penis that has the capability to enlarge or expand.
What is erectile dysfunction?
Erectile dysfunction occurs when the penis is unable to develop an erection or keep an erection long enough during sexual intercourse. When there is not enough flow of blood to the penis then an erectile dysfunction will occur.
Several men from all over the globe suffers from erectile dysfunction. However, men above fifty years old are said to have this problem more than younger men. Erectile dysfunctions can development when men are diagnosed with prostate cancer and it may be a long term problem after surgery. But younger males should not rule themselves out of this abnormality because there have been report of young men suffering from erectile dysfunctions.
Some male are unfortunate to have been in a car accident that damage a part of there body causing them to have an erectile dysfunction. But two popular factors that can cause erectile dysfunction are bad diet over the years and the abuse of drugs and alcohol.
What should I do?
Many men are reluctant in discussing problems such as erectile dysfunction. This situation has cause marital problems and loss of confidence among men. Having difficulty in achieving and maintaining an erection is not easy to talk about, but if the problem is known to others then a possible solution may occur.
The first step in correcting erectile dysfunction is to go to your doctor and explain your situation. There are several medications that can help such as Viagra, Cialis or Levitra. Penis pumps are used more often and becoming popular because it is considered as a natural way to conquer erectile dysfunction.
You can also go to an herbalist. Some individuals have testified that they used natural herbs and supplements to correct erectile dysfunction.
Exercise and having a proper diet can do a whole lot and is the best solution for males who have seen early signs of erectile dysfunction. It is best to cut out bad practices such as drinking strong drinks, smoking and taking drugs. Early morning exercises are ideal because it enhances you metabolism after a long sleep. Eating on time is good because you need all the energy you have to perform properly in the bedroom.

Be dedicated to the health programs you have implemented

A number of persons believe that they have to train like an athlete to get the beautiful body they desire. But the training that an athlete does takes a lot of time and dedication. Athletes even go through rigorous routines to be in great shape.

Since most of us have a 9 to 5 job and does not have the time to go through all the routines of an athlete, it is therefore necessary for us to investigate and create a system that will help to keep us in good shape. I must say that not all the systems presented to us is good but it our duty to find the best solution to our health problems.

A number of individuals have written testimonies about different health programs that they have tried and how these programs worked for them. Some of these programs even have time limits for success once you’ve followed the instructions given properly.

Even through many of us have tried so hard to lose weight orburn the excess fat on our bodies for some time, this does not mean that we should give up and accept how look or feel. We just need to be dedicated to what ever programs we have implemented to gain success.

Remember, when we have a healthy body, we will have a healthy mind.

Thank you for reading today’s post.
Have healthy day!

Schizophrenia a Mental Disease

Early this week I was at a special committee meeting in the park when a man walked up to our location and started to disturb the meeting. When the director of the group confronted him he shaped is fingers like a gun, pointed it towards the director and started shouting; “I am the general and you are the enemy”. He was there for about two minutes repeating the same thing when another group member says, “What is wrong with this Schizo?”

So today I have decided to blog about Schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is a mental disorder that is due to a chemical imbalance in the brain.
Schizophrenia is a complex disorder that can take many forms but there are two main categories of symptoms. Two main categories of symptoms associated with schizophrenia are positive symptoms (Type 1 symptoms) and negative symptoms (Type 2 symptoms).
Some characteristics of positive symptoms are delusions, hallucinations, disorganized thoughts and speech, and disorganized behaviour.
Some signs of negative symptoms are severe reduction or complete absence of speech and unable to achieve goal-oriented task.

The most common behaviours of schizophrenia that are easy identified are;

Hallucinations – individuals hear voices or see things that are not present.

Violence and Aggression – individual might isolate themselves from others because of lost of trust and might become violent and aggressive.

Paranoid – This is an unusual behaviour, individuals believe that others are trying to hurt them or persecute them. As a result they may keep to themselves and even hide in isolated areas in the environment.
Some theorists suggest that schizophrenia is as a result of biological factors while other says it is developed based on some psychological factors.

Can Schizophrenia be treated?

Yes! Schizophrenia can be treated but it involves more than one treatment methods.

Type of Treatments
1)      Biological Treatment – Antipsychotic Drugs
2)      Psychological and social treatments – Behavioural, cognitive and social interventions, family therapy.

Did you know that schizophrenia is mostly associated with men rather than women?

Thanks for reading today’s post.
